Hi! I’m Liz

Business lawyer, entrepreneur, IP strategist.

I help innovative business owners develop their intellectual property, protect their enterprises, and skyrocket their success.

MY STORY

Hi! I’m Liz Pifko, founder and managing attorney at Corvinus Law.

After working as an associate attorney at several well-known and highly regarded litigation firms for nearly a decade, I decided I was done with “traditional” law firm life. It turns out, 16-hour work days, endless emergency e-mails at all  hours of the night, and being forced to wear a suit every single day is not really my thing. So, I ditched the associate life, and began working on creating a business around my desired lifestyle of traveling the world and spending time with the people I love.

I started and participated in several companies over the years, including two e-commerce stores, a digital marketing agency, a global business consulting firm, and a marketplace for fair-trade and sustainably sourced products. And while these ventures have generated a decent income, in my heart I was always drawn back to my one true passion – the practice of law.

At the same time, I was interacting with more and more business owners, many of whom were asking me for legal help and advice. I realized that all the things that I considered the “easy part” of building and running a business – entity formation, contract drafting and negotiation, regulatory compliance, dealing with the IRS and state agencies, documenting my deals – were what other business owners were struggling with the most.

With that insight, I founded Corvinus Law, a boutique practice focusing exclusively on serving my clients in the areas of Corporate and Intellectual Property (IP) law. It is my way of using my talent, legal education and experience both as a lawyer and as an entrepreneur to contribute to the growth and transformative innovation that startups and small businesses bring to their communities and the world. It is also my way of proving to myself (and to the legal industry) that it is possible to live a life of freedom and fulfillment, while running a successful law practice helping entrepreneurs protect their businesses and monetize their intellectual property.

Like starting any new business, the journey has been scary, exciting, stressful, exhilarating, confusing, and at times enough to make me question my own sanity. However, in retrospect, I can unequivocally say that ditching the traditional law firm model, and believing in myself, my dreams, and my ability to accomplish them on my own terms, has definitely been the best decision I’ve ever made.

Today, I split my time between New Orleans, where the firm is headquartered, and my clients’ offices across the United States and Europe. I spend lots of time working on my laptop in the sun, taking exercise breaks in the middle of the day, drafting contracts and filing IP registrations with my puppy sleeping by my feet, and registering new business entities while lounging around in yoga pants, hair up in a messy bun. I get to forget about the skirt suit and stilettos, while watching and working with my clients as they bring their world-changing ideas to life.

This is not to say I’m not serious about my work. To the contrary, I had always been proud of my legal skills and exceptional work product, which continue to afford me considerable recognition by my peers, colleagues, and clients. Over the course of my career, I’ve been repeatedly recognized as a rising expert in my field by publications and organizations such as Super Lawyers, the American Law Society, Marquis Who’s Who in American Law, and other professional organizations. I’ve also been featured on numerous media outlets, and my work has been published in legal journals and publications, including the Defense Research Institute’s DRI Magazine.

In addition to practicing law, I’ve written numerous articles and publications on various legal topics from mass torts to business, and created a number of informational courses on business and IP law (which are currently undergoing a major re-design to conform to the firm’s brand, but will be coming out soon, so stay tuned).

I also coach and mentor entrepreneurs and small business owners in the areas of contract drafting and negotiation; regulatory compliance; workflow automation; and setting up legally compliant internal systems and processes in the areas of marketing and advertising compliance, HR, record keeping, and more.

Super Lawyers Rising Stars (2017, 2018)

I’ve been selected to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list for the past two consecutive years, and have been the subject of a fun editorial in the 2018 Super Lawyers Magazine, which you can check out here.

Super Lawyers describes itself as “a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.” The Super Lawyers list recognizes no more than five percent of attorneys in each state, while the Rising Stars list recognizes no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state. (That’s right, I’m in the top 2.5%! And yes, I’ll shamelessly gloat about it all day, thank you very much.)

According to the organization’s website, attorneys are selected using a patented multiphase selection process, taking into account peer nominations, evaluations, and independent research regarding the attorney’s professional achievements. The stated objective of the process is “to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel.”

Marquis Who’s Who In American Law (2018)

I am honored to be featured in the 2018 publication of Marquis Who’s Who in American Law. According to the institution’s website, “[t]he family of Marquis Who’s Who publications presents unmatched coverage of the lives of today’s leaders and achievers from both the United States and around the world, and from every significant field of endeavor.”
